Retinal Tears and Detachments—Time Is Critical.

retinaltear

Retinal tears and detachments are serious conditions that can result in blindness. The retina is the inner layer of the eye comprised of light-sensitive tissue. The lens and cornea of the eye creates an image of the visual world on the retina, much in the same way that a camera operates. Light striking the retina triggers nerve impulses, which are then sent to the brain via the optic nerve—and we are aware of the image.

A Retinal Tear occurs when the vitreous fluid (the clear, gel-like substance in the center of your eye) shrinks, pulling on the retina. This creates pressure and may cause the retina layer to tear away, causing blindness. However, if the tear is discovered soon enough, treatment may prevent the retina from detaching. Laser treatments can repair the tear, and the retina is carefully monitored afterward to make sure that the eye is healing properly.

A retinal detachment is much more serious, and has an immediate effect on vision. The detachment must be caught early—if it is, then surgery can be used to attempt a re-attachment.

How do you know if you’re experiencing a retinal issue? If you suddenly start seeing flashes, or notice more floaters than usual in your vision, consult an eye care professional immediately. Floaters and flashes can be symptoms of a retinal tear or detachment. You may be referred to a retinal specialist.

If you are experiencing vision problems, remember that retinal tears and detachments can be treated if detected early. Call (865) 584-0905 to schedule an appointment. Or click here, fill out the form and we will contact you to schedule an appointment.
