What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is known as the silent thief of sight because there are often no symptoms in the early stages. Glaucoma is actually a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve, usually because of an increase in fluid pressure in the eye. This can occur due to fluid buildup (primary open angle glaucoma) or because there is a blockage in the drainage canal (angle closure glaucoma). If fluid is allowed to collect, the optic nerve will sustain serious damage and vision could be permanently lost. Glaucoma can also be present at birth (congenital glaucoma) or develop as a complication of another eye surgery, disease or condition (secondary glaucoma).

Glaucoma Treatments in Knoxville

Certain symptoms could indicate that you have a severe type of glaucoma: a sudden decrease in vision, extreme eye pain, frequent headache, nausea, vomiting and light sensitivity.

Regular eye exams are the only way to know for sure if you have glaucoma.

There is no cure for glaucoma, but the condition can be monitored and treated to preserve your eyesight. At Drs. Campbell, Cunningham, Taylor & Haun, we will assess your condition and recommend the best course of treatment(s) to reduce your eye pressure.

  • Medicated eye drops: taken daily to reduce eye pressure.
  • Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS): different surgical options that focus on creating openings in the trabecular meshwork for fluid to flow properly. Using iStent inject®, we insert two tiny stents in the trabecular meshwork. During goniotomy, a section of the trabecular tissue is removed to allow access to the collector channels in the eye.
  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT): laser energy that targets specific cells to clear blocked drainage channels.
  • Laser peripheral iridotomy: laser energy is used to create a small hole on the outer edge of the iris to release fluids from the eye.
