How Corneal Thickness Shapes Your Vision Correction Options
Your cornea may be only about half a millimeter thick, but that small amount of tissue plays a major role in how your eye focuses light. It is also one of the first things a surgeon evaluates when determining which vision correction procedures may be appropriate for you.
Corneal thickness matters because LASIK changes the shape of the cornea. During the procedure, a thin flap is created and an excimer laser removes microscopic amounts of corneal tissue to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. Before recommending LASIK, your surgeon needs to know that enough healthy corneal tissue will remain afterward to maintain the eye’s structural stability.
Thickness alone does not tell the whole story
A cornea that measures within a typical range may still have an unusual shape or other characteristics that affect whether LASIK is advisable. That is why a comprehensive evaluation includes detailed measurements of both the thickness and the structure of the cornea.

Someone with a thinner cornea and a stronger prescription may therefore have fewer LASIK options than someone with a thicker cornea and a milder prescription.
Fewer LASIK options does not mean no options
One of the benefits of a thorough evaluation is discovering which approaches may suit your individual anatomy. Depending on your prescription, corneal measurements, age and overall eye health, alternatives such as PRK or an implantable lens may be considered.
PRK reshapes the cornea without creating the same type of flap used in LASIK. Because the surgical approach differs, PRK may be an option for some people whose corneal characteristics make LASIK less suitable. Implantable lenses such as EVO ICL take another approach entirely, correcting vision without removing corneal tissue.
This is also why an online LASIK calculator or a glasses prescription alone cannot determine whether you are a candidate. Two people with identical prescriptions can have very different corneal measurements and receive very different recommendations.
