Do Cataracts Only Affect Older People?
When most people think of cataracts, they picture someone in their 70s or 80s. While age is the biggest risk factor, the truth is that cataracts don’t only affect older adults. People in their 40s, 50s, and even younger can develop cataracts under certain circumstances.
During Cataract Awareness Month, it’s important to understand what cataracts are, who is at risk, and when you should have your eyes evaluated.
Age Is the Biggest Risk Factor – But Not the Only One
Most cataracts develop gradually as part of the natural aging process. Over time, proteins inside the eye’s natural lens begin to break down, causing the lens to become cloudy.
However, cataracts may develop earlier because of factors such as:
- Diabetes
- Previous eye injuries
- Long-term steroid use
- Smoking
- Excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure
- Previous eye surgery
- Certain inherited conditions
These are often referred to as secondary, traumatic, or early-onset cataracts.
Symptoms Can Be Easy to Miss
Whether cataracts develop at age 50 or age 80, the symptoms are often the same:
- Blurry or cloudy vision
- Glare around lights
- Difficulty driving at night
- Frequent prescription changes
- Colors appearing dull
- Double vision in one eye
Because cataracts usually progress slowly, many people adapt to the changes without realizing how much their vision has declined.
Can Cataracts Be Prevented?
Although aging cannot be prevented, healthy lifestyle choices may help support long-term eye health.
Protecting your eyes from UV exposure, avoiding smoking, managing diabetes, maintaining healthy blood pressure, and scheduling routine eye exams can all contribute to preserving vision as you age.
When Should You Request an Eye Exam?
Adults should not wait until they notice significant vision loss before seeing an ophthalmologist. Regular comprehensive eye exams allow cataracts to be detected early and monitored over time.
If cataracts begin interfering with your ability to drive, read, work, or enjoy everyday activities, it may be time to discuss treatment options.
