Uveitis: Affecting More Americans

 

Uveitis is a type of eye inflammation. It is an irritation of the uvea, or center part of the eye, which includes the iris and surrounding tissue. Uveitis can be a serious condition which can lead to permanent vision loss if not identified and properly treated.

Uveitis  can be caused by a number of factors, including autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis. It can also result from infection or exposure to toxins. Because there are so many potential causes, your Retina Specialist must determine the underlying reason for your condition for effective treatment.

Symptoms can include eye redness, pain, light sensitivity, floaters (dark spots in your field of vision), blurred vision and decreased vision. Uveitis symptoms can come on suddenly, which is why it’s important to seek medical attention should they occur. Symptoms may also manifest gradually, so if you notice minor irritation or vision issues becoming worse, it pays to consult your physician.

Uveitis may affect one or both eyes.

Once uveitis is diagnosed, your Retina Specialist will not only look at the condition of your eye or eyes, but also try to determine the underlying cause. Since there are a variety of issues that can cause a flare-up of uveitis, more tests may be involved. And depending if the cause is an autoimmune disorder, a bacterial or viral condition, or another problem such as cancer, your Retina Specialist will tailor treatment accordingly

Treatments may include antiflammatories, antibiotics, antiviral medication, steroid drops or surgery.
