Local Surgeons;
High Quality

At Campbell Cunningham Laser Center, we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality vision correction in the area. Our LASIK surgeons are fellowship-trained in corneal and refractive surgery and utilize the most advanced, blade-free technologies to help our patients achieve their best vision. Our team provides ongoing care throughout your entire vision correction journey because they live and work right here in the Knoxville community.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure performed to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. When you have one of these refractive errors, it means that your corneal shape isn’t allowing light entering your eye to land on your retina (the back of your eye). By slightly altering your corneal shape with a laser, our team can help focus that light onto your retina, effectively clearing up your blurry vision. In most cases, we only need to remove an amount of tissue that is thinner than a human hair!

Our LASIK Technologies

Every eye is unique, so we have invested in LASIK technologies that allow us to provide fully custom vision correction. We start by analyzing your eye with CONTOURA® Vision and the WaveLight Topolyzer® VARIO Diagnostic Device to precisely map about 22,000 data points of the unique hills and valleys of your eye. Using this information, we will know exactly where your cornea should be made flatter, steeper or smoother. During the LASIK procedure, we use two different WaveLight® Refractive Suite lasers to access and reshape your corneal tissue:

  • FS200 Femtosecond Laser to create a corneal flap (without using a blade) so we can fold this flap over and access the underlying tissue
  • EX500 WaveLight® Excimer Laser to reshape your cornea

Amazingly, the corneal reshaping process only takes seconds to complete! The corneal flap is returned to its natural position where it begins to heal immediately. Some patients start seeing vision improvement after their procedure, but we still ask that you return home to rest your eyes. Most patients can drive themselves to their follow-up appointment the next day without glasses!

Free Consultations

Unfortunately, LASIK isn’t right for everyone. One of the most important steps of your LASIK
journey will be the free consultation. This appointment gives our team the ability to assess your eye health to determine if LASIK would be a safe and effective option to improve your vision. We check the thickness of your cornea and the size of your pupils, look for signs of eye disease, ask about your overall health and more. All of these details are taken into consideration before we will approve you for LASIK in Knoxville. We might recommend a LASIK alternative (see next section). We don’t take this appointment lightly – it’s how we can have such great LASIK results!

LASIK Alternatives

Even if LASIK isn’t right for your eyes, there are vision correction options that can help you
achieve clear vision. Our expert team may recommend:

EVO ICL™

Implantable Collamer Lenses, like the EVO ICL™, are becoming increasingly
popular. This procedure does not involve the removal of corneal tissue. Instead, a thin lens is implanted into your eye to make your vision sharper and more vivid. ICLs are intended for people with nearsightedness or astigmatism who have thin corneas and/or a history of dry eye. The Collamer lens works in harmony with your eye’s natural chemistry and even provides a layer of UV protection. Vision results are often immediate and no one will be able to see the lens in your eye.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Refractive Lens Exchange is similar to cataract surgery, but you don’t have to have a cloudy eye lens to have this procedure. It’s a way to prevent cataracts and improve your vision at the same time. During the procedure, your cloudy eye lens is gently removed via a small incision. Then an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) made for your specifications is inserted to provide clear vision. We recommend patients take about a week to recover from RLE. The vision results are worth it – and the lens won’t develop a cataract in the future!

PRK

Like LASIK, PRK incorporates an excimer laser to reshape your corneal tissue. But instead of creating a corneal flap, a thin outer layer of your cornea (epithelium) is removed to allow access to the underlying tissue. This is often recommended for people with thin corneas. After surgery, your eye will need time to regrow the epithelial tissue, so you may need to take a few days off work to fully recover. PRK has been around even longer than LASIK and it’s still a very effective procedure.

“I had LASIK eye surgery completed two months ago and I cannot say enough about how happy I have been with my results and the care of Dr. McMillin and the staff at this office. Dr. McMillin did an excellent job with my surgery, ensured I was comfortable throughout the process, and answered all questions that I had. Highly recommend!”

“Got Lasik with Dr. Sollenberger a few weeks ago and it was the easiest process! I got scheduled for the surgery a week after I called, had my post-op and got cleared, and then was ready to go. The Dr. explained everything step by step so I knew what to expect and even played my favorite music during the procedure. It’s an awkward experience, but it goes so quickly and they talk you through the whole thing. Everything post-op has been seamless as well! Best decision I’ve made!”
